Moving to a new neighborhood can be exciting, but it can also be a bit daunting. You may not know anyone in your new area, and you may not know where to go for information about local events, recommendations, or community issues. Fortunately, there are several apps and websites that can help you connect with your new community and learn about what’s happening in your neighborhood. Here are some of the most useful ones:

  1. Nextdoor

Nextdoor is a social networking service for neighborhoods that allows neighbors to connect with one another and share information about local events, crime, recommendations, and community issues. Joining Nextdoor can be beneficial when you move to a new neighborhood as it provides a way to connect with your new community, learn about local events, and get recommendations for services and businesses in the area. It can also help you stay informed about any safety concerns in your neighborhood and provide a platform for discussion and problem-solving with your neighbors. For me, I’ll admit, there are times it can be a bit dramatic but other times, we learn what’s happening around us. To get started with Nextdoor, simply go to https://nextdoor.com/ and sign up for an account.

  1. Yelp

Yelp is a website and app that allows users to search for local businesses and read reviews from other customers. I use this almost exclusively for finding amazing, local restaurants/ food spots because I’ve learned it can be a bit biased in the reviews that it considers for many other types of businesses. However, it rarely if ever points me in a bad direction when it comes to food. For Devin, the kids and me, we’re always on the go, so we eat out a fair amount and this is how we often find the next great spot! Not only can we find an amazing hole-in-the-wall that we otherwise would have never known about, we can find out about the atmosphere, whether it’s kid friendly and even peek at photos of food others have posted previously before ever choosing to give it a shot. You can also use Yelp to write reviews of businesses you’ve patronized, which can be helpful for other people in your community. To get started with Yelp, simply go to https://www.yelp.com/ and create an account.

  1. Google Maps

Google Maps is a mapping app that can help you navigate your new neighborhood and find local businesses and services. You can use it to get driving or walking directions, find nearby restaurants or stores, and explore the area around your new home. You can also use Google Maps to see real-time traffic information and to save your favorite places for easy access later on. To get started with Google Maps, simply download the app from the App Store or Google Play, or go to https://www.google.com/maps/ on your computer. Also, if you’re in a new community and no one can find your house because it’s not on Google yet, keep reading! You can claim your home as missing location to solve this problem. From a computer, simply go to Google Maps by clicking the link above. Then, search for the address of the missing place or from your home, click the small ‘target’ icon in the lower right hand corner to show your location. Make sure you mark it accurately and click, ‘Add a missing place.’

  1. Meetup

Meetup is a social networking platform that allows users to find and join groups of people with similar interests in their area. Whether you’re into hiking, book clubs, or board games, you can find a Meetup group that caters to your interests. Meetup groups typically organize events and activities that allow members to get to know each other and pursue their shared interests. This platform is especially useful for those that move to new state or a fair distance from their previous home. To get started with Meetup, simply go to https://www.meetup.com/ and create an account.

  1. Facebook Groups

Facebook Groups is a feature within Facebook that allows users to create and join groups based on shared interests, hobbies, or geographic location. You can use Facebook Groups to connect with people in your new community, ask for recommendations for local businesses or services, or simply chat with other people who share your interests. To get started with Facebook Groups, simply log in to your Facebook account and click on the “Groups” tab on the left-hand side of the screen. For private groups such as the one we have for our clients, you’ll need an invite and they’re not searchable. For our clients, we post our Client Appreciation Events, the occasional giveaway and other fun happenings. If you’re not in the ‘VIP Group – The Capney Collection Powered by Compass’ group yet, let us know and send us your Facebook over so we can make sure you get an invite!

  1. Local news websites

Most cities and towns in Colorado have local news websites that can provide information about events, local issues, and community happenings. These websites can be a great way to stay informed about what’s happening in your new neighborhood and to get involved in local events or initiatives. To find local news websites in your area, simply do a Google search for your city or town name followed by “local news.”

Here are some examples of local news sites:

Parker: https://parkerchronicle.net/

Castle Rock: https://castlerocknewspress.net/

Littleton: https://littletonindependent.net/

BONUS TIP: If you’re in a new development/ neighborhood, you’ll want to follow the steps above in Section 3 to add your home to Google Maps. Then, to add your home to Apple Maps:

  1. Go to Maps on an iPhone when you’re at home.
  2. Zoom in and touch your location
  3. Select ‘Drop Pin’
  4. Scroll down and select ‘+ Add to Maps’
  5. Follow on screen instructions to add your address, the street name, etc.

In conclusion, there are several apps and websites that can help you connect with your new community. It never hurts to be in the know!
